The Department of Optoelectronics and Information Technologies was founded in 1979, but under its current name it has been operating since 2012. For decades, the Department has been providing students with training in specialties that were at first related to Optoelectronics, and then to Information Technologies, as well. In particular, these were the specialties “Optical and optoelectronic devices and systems” (1979-1996), “Optoelectronics” (1996-2002), “Applied Physics” (2003-2010) and “Radiophysics and electronics” (2005-2010). Within the framework of these specialties, the department was responsible for the specializations “Optoelectronic information systems” (1979-1998), “Optoelectronic Informatics” (1999-2004), “Optoelectronic methods and techniques in biology and medicine” (1998-2007) and “Optoelectronic and radioecological devices and systems” (2004-2008).

Today, the Department’s status allows students to graduate and to be trained as specialists for the Bachelor’s and Master’s educational qualification levels in the specialty 122 “Computer Science” (since 2012). Starting from 2017, the Department has also been training bachelors in the specialty 126 “Information Systems and Technologies”, and since 2019 bachelors have been trained in the specialty 121 “Software Engineering”. Within the framework of the specialties “Computer Science” and “Information Systems and Technologies”, the Department opened the specializations “Artificial Intelligence Systems” (since 2012) and “Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning” (since 2018). In addition, the Department delivers separate academic disciplines for bachelors studying in the specialty 153 “Micro- and Nanosystem Engineering”.

The main scientific and pedagogical interests of the department include Optoelectronics and Artificial Intelligence Systems. Particularly, these include recording, processing, transmitting and displaying information, digital signals and image processing, image recognition, computer linguistics and natural language processing, complex systems and networks, expert systems, knowledge bases, neural networks, intelligent sensors, radiological monitoring systems, etc.

Our goals

The mission of the department

It is known that today the world is on the eve of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the most important components of which are artificial intelligence and big data, the Internet of Things, virtual reality and three-dimensional printing. Well-trained, highly qualified young professionals are needed to ensure this technological breakthrough. The Department of Optoelectronics and Information Technologies sees its place in the educational space of our country first of all in the field of information technologies related to artificial intelligence. Research and applied development of artificial intelligence systems is given a prominent place, in particular, in the leading research centers of the United States, China, Europe, Japan and Korea. It is assumed that further adoption of the strategic concept of artificial intelligence development in Ukraine will also lead to a surge of activity in this area. In this regard, the Department of Optoelectronics and Information Technology sees itself as a scientific and educational unit designed to maximize the technological progress of the Ukrainian state.

The Department of Optoelectronics and Information Technologies should become a powerful local center of educational and methodological and scientific activities aimed at improving and developing education and science in the field of information technology, especially artificial intelligence. The main priority of the Department of Optoelectronics and Information Technologies is the study of artificial intelligence, and an additional priority is the integration of appropriate methods and systems in the field of optoelectronics.

The Department of Optoelectronics and Information Technology primarily provides bachelor’s and master’s programs in specializations related to artificial intelligence, as well as is responsible for teaching bachelors disciplines related to optoelectronics. The defining and most recognizable topics of the department’s disciplines should be optoelectronics, processing, transmission and display of information, digital signal and image processing, pattern recognition, computational linguistics and natural language processing, expert systems, knowledge bases, neural networks, intelligent sensors, as well as complex systems and networks.

The key to the successful career of our graduates should be a balanced set of disciplines provided by the department, their compliance with modern needs of industry and society in general, as well as a high scientific and methodological level of their teaching. Educational and methodical work of the Department of Optoelectronics and Information Technologies is aimed at solving problems of improving the quality of training of future specialists in computer science and information technology on the basis of highly qualified teachers and a comprehensive approach to improving the content, organization and teaching methods. The department sees the sources of replenishment of highly qualified personnel in the involvement of postgraduate graduates, talented graduates of the faculty, leading scientists of the region and highly qualified practitioners in the field of information technology.

We state that without serious scientific achievements on the subject of academic disciplines, the teaching of these disciplines would be incomplete. The Department of Optoelectronics and Information Technologies is a team of qualified scientists that conducts basic and applied research in demand by society. The department sees its functions not only in training specialists for industry and business, but also in the formation of the scientific elite of society through graduate and doctoral studies.

Vision of the department

The Department of Optoelectronics and Information Technologies works in the field of training specialists in the fields of informatics and optoelectronics. The department should set an example of high quality standards of training of these specialists in accordance with the requirements of the time, taking into account the situation on the labor market and current trends in information technology. Ways to achieve these goals are hard work, dedicated scientific and pedagogical activities of the department, ensuring the full realization of scientific and pedagogical potential of employees, as well as the introduction and development of innovative specializations, techniques and teaching methods.

As a result, the Department of Optoelectronics and Information Technology should become a leading and prestigious scientific and pedagogical unit at the Faculty of Electronics and Computer Technology in the fields of informatics and optoelectronics, especially in the field of artificial intelligence systems.

The goals of the department

The Department of Optoelectronics and Information Technologies should work to train highly qualified specialists in the field of IT technologies, as well as to strengthen the prestige, role and importance of Lviv University in Ukrainian society. To this end, it is necessary to intensify and improve the quality of the educational process and research, to preserve and increase the human potential of the educational process, to improve and modernize its infrastructure and educational and methodological capabilities.
